CASE STUDY - Potelco

January 22, 2020

About Potelco

Potelco is an electric utility contractor that does business across the Pacific Northwest. Because the industry is extremely competitive, the company is always on the lookout for ways to get the job done faster, but with no comprise in safety or in the quality of its work.

For Potelco, the need to operate more efficiently and be more competitive is taken seriously. So seriously, new ideas that will help the company run more productively are welcomed with open ears and an open mind.

When Potelco heard about the benefits of using wireless technology to track and manage its tools and equipment, it was very interested. When the company heard about the distinct advantages of Recon Dynamics, it was ready to talk.

Why Recon

After considering a number of companies, Potelco decided to go with Recon for three important reasons:

1. Unlike every other provider, Recon’s data transmission is fully automated. Managers and field workers can get the information they need with no scanning, no apps, and no QR codes, making the process easier and faster.

2. Recon’s sensors have twice the range of its competitors with batteries that last 10+ years.

3. Recon’s industrial-strength sensors and receivers are rugged and built to withstand the rigors of foul weather and demanding jobsites.

A smooth adoption

Potelco uses Recon’s technology and data to keep tabs on more than 1,700 tools, pieces of equipment, and trailers. Tailored to Potelco’s needs and requirements, Recon’s data is clear and easy for non-tech experts to utilize.

Since the system is automated and requires no manual entry, it allows busy workers to focus on what they do best – build electric grids. The Potelco team embraced the technology quickly and adoption went smoothly. In fact, according to Tony Blas, Potelco’s Operations Manager, “It’s been amazing how quickly the team has taken to Recon’s system. Our people love it.”

They especially like having photos of tools and equipment readily available because it helps eliminate confusion. In addition, being able to know where assets are located has improved and streamlined operations. There’s far less looking around for tools and equipment, far fewer items go missing (including materials), and employees appreciate Recon’s easy-to-use web interface.

Saving time means saving money

Potelco is satisfied not only with how easy Recon’s asset management system is to use, but with its benefits.

The company estimates its workers each save roughly 15 minutes a day being able to quickly locate the tools, equipment, trailers, and materials needed to get their job done. That translates into about 50 hours per year, and with pay averaging $50 per hour, Potelco estimates it saves $2,500 per employee per year – or gains that much in productivity.

“Recon’s system increases our crew productivity

by at least 15 minutes a day, per person. That’s 50 hours per year,

for an annual savings of at least $2,500 per employee.”

Potelco also appreciates how easy it is to make sure all necessary tools are on the trucks before they leave the yard for the job. This has dramatically cut down on the need for workers to drive back to the shop because someone forgot something. It’s also reduced the need to buy or rent tools that were forgotten but needed on out-of-state jobs.

According to Tucci, “Implementing Recon’s asset tracking system to help manage our tools, equipment, and trailers was one of the best decisions we’ve ever made.”
